High heels were all the rage in the 1950s. They drew attention to women’s ankles and calves. The style was to wear a very thin heel, made possible by Italian shoe designer Ferragamo. He was the first to put a steel support into a man-made heel.

The new stiletto heels drew notice from men and women everywhere, but that’s not all. Hotels and airports paid special attention. That was because the steel supports were making holes in their floors! Carpet was found to be one solution to the problem.
